Research supports the strategy of interdisciplinary activities for increasing retention of learning. Using music to promote literacy skills opens up opportunities for learners to increase engagement in their learning. Parallel plots, characters, settings and themes will be examined in literary works and musical productions. Poetic techniques and devices will be highlighted in selected songs, and to reach younger students, rhyme, rhythm and patterns will be featured in silly songs.
Come for a rich and stimulating session that will inspire you to bring music into the classroom – you will love the results!

Music with a Social Message -Connecting Music with Social Studies
"Your presentation of this topic was well-expressed, organized and I thoroughly enjoyed it."
In most decades of American history, music has influenced and reflected values of the time period. Using songs as primary sources, learners can consider from a historical and global perspective what the songs reveal about the events and attitudes of the era.
By listening to and analyzing lyrics of selected samples of popular music from several decades, participants will learn how to help students gain a greater understanding of historical and political forces as well as the emotional climate. Sample historical periods to be examined include the birth of our nation, America in times of war, the 1800’s in the South, and the 1960’s.
This workshop will open up new possibilities for the integration of music with social studies through discussion, and participants will be inspired to bring this practice to the classroom.
