A Beginning Level SMART Board Workshop
Interactive whiteboards are rapidly changing teachers' lesson planning skills. Now photo images, videos, audio, websites, and interactive games can be easily embedded into lessons to make them more relevant and motivating. In this workshop, K-12 educators will be introduced to basic SMART Board skills and become familiar with the Notebook software that accompanies this board. This six-hour workshop can be presented in one day or three two-hour sessions. Each participant will receive the Level 1 Learner Workbook written by the SMART Company that thoroughly outlines the use of the SMART interactive board. Participants will learn how to:
- turn on/off and orient the SMART Board
- touch the SMART Board
- launch the Notebook software for lesson planning
- manipulate the different tools available in the Notebook software
- access and use the floating toolbar
- utilize the Page Sorter, Attachment Tab, Gallery, and Properties Tab for creating simple classroom lessons
- download teaching and learning materials for use with the SMART Board
Audience: K-12 teachers, paraprofessionals, substitute teachers
Recommendation: maximum of 15 participants
(It is necessary for participants to have access to computers with Notebook software loaded on them.)
Time frame: one 6-hour day or three 2-hour sessions

SMART Board Lesson Design for the Intermediate SMART Board User
This workshop is for the intermediate SMART Board user who knows the basics of how to operate the SMART Board and is now ready to delve into SMART Board lesson design. Participants will learn how to structure and organize a SMART Board lesson plan by:
- creating easy to use lesson title, teacher note, and lesson note pages
- grouping pages in a lesson
- linking pages in the same lesson file, another file on a computer, a website, or an attachment already included under the Attachment Tab
- adding their own material (photo images, videos, audio, maps, clip art, etc.) to the My Contents folder found in the Gallery Tab
- designing their own lesson themes and interactives
- adding graphic buttons and Pull Tabs for differentiating lesson materials
Time will be allotted to explore websites where one can go to download SMART Board lessons already designed by teachers for use in the classroom. Hands-on time will also be provided for participants to start creating their own lesson plans.
This eight-hour workshop can be presented in four-two hour sessions. Each participant will receive the Level 2 Learner Workbook written by the SMART Company that thoroughly outlines lesson designing practices and tips.
Audience: K-12 teachers, administrators
Recommendation: maximum of 15 participants

Time frame: four 2-hour sessions

An Introduction to the SMART Table
The SMART Table is an interactive learning center with a touch-sensitive surface that allows for more than one student to “touch” it at a time. The Table encourages collaboration and cooperation as students create, select, move, and resize digital objects on its surface. In this workshop, participants will explore:
- SMART Table Basics: Become familiar with the SMART Table, how it works, and how you can use it in your classroom
- SMART Table Applications: Learn and use the software applications on the SMART Table
- SMART Table Toolkit: Examine the SMART Table customization software, and learn how to download ready-made, customized activities and applications
- Customizing Applications: Learn how to modify a SMART Table application and create their own customized SMART Table activity
Each participant will receive the SMART Table Training Workbook that has been written by the SMART Company about the use of the SMART Table.
Audience: K-3 teachers, paraprofessionals, substitute teachers
Recommendation: maximum of 10 participants

Time frame: one 6-hour day

About the Presenter
Susan Johnson
Susan holds a BS from State University of NY at Geneseo and an MS in Education from the University of Rochester. She is a certified SMART Notebook Software Trainer and a certified SMART Table Trainer. Susan is an educator with extensive experience as a classroom teacher, a technology integration specialist and director of staff development K-12 for a suburban Rochester, NY, school district.
As Teacher Center Director, Susan represented the Teacher Center in local and state forums and was responsible for preparing the yearly Continuation Grant – that magic document that keeps teacher centers afloat. Susan participated in the leadership of the Teacher Center Policy Board along with selected teachers, administrators, community representatives, higher education leaders and parents. In addition, she delivered workshops and training in technology and led the annual self-evaluation of the Teacher Center.
As a classroom teacher, Susan taught grades 4-6 and worked with students of all ability levels. As a professional development trainer, she focused on technology, designing computer labs for three schools and purchasing hardware for those labs and for the special education program. She taught technology application courses for faculty and staff across the curriculum and across all grade and ability levels.
